The first West Indian carnival in Europe was founded in Leeds in 1967 by Arthur France, who remembers the first year being packed — with people who thought his mad idea would never work. Now nearing its 50th anniversary, Leeds Carnival attracts 100,000 party people to Potternewton Park every year.
