The Warehouse

Slung Low, The Warehouse In Holbeck, Crosby Street, Holbeck, Leeds, UK

One of two venues for the mighty Slung Low! I have been a real fan of the company since moving to Leeds in 2019. In that time they have been based in three homes, all unconventional spaces, but all of them bringing theatre and culture and art to the centre of the community they are working with – which is really inspiring.

I particularly like how as a company they’re questioning the ‘norms’ that are expected: everything is Pay What You Decide, during the pandemic they ran a foodbank and testing centre, they put opera alongside drag cabaret. We’re really lucky to have them in the city and this venue is well worth checking out.

Sunny Bank Mills

Sunny Bank Mills Farsley, Farsley, Pudsey, UK

If you love making ‘stuff,’ supporting local independents and love a nice old building I can strongly recommend Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley. I have spent many an hour scrabbling through the Scrap Store and have attended classes at The Sew School. It’s a great setting and surrounded by loads of local coffee shops and bars for when you need a rest.

The Wardrobe

The Wardrobe, Saint Peter's Square, Leeds, UK

I have to give a shout out to The Wardrobe. As the nearest bar to the conservatoire it’s definitely the place I’ve spent most of my social time in Leeds. But also a fantastic venue for live music, club nights and comedy.

I went to see Jayde Adams there last year who was brilliant, and in the same week they hosted our Musical Theatre cabaret, a showcase for our Pop students and the Leeds Jazz Festival. It’s an eclectic venue which always has a really nice vibe – whatever the event. And now, with Slap and Pickle they do a great burger and chips too!

Sushi Waka

Sushi Waka, New Briggate, Leeds, UK

My family love sushi, my daughter especially. When we moved to Leeds in 2019 it was a big deal finding somewhere we all enjoyed to eat.

Sushi Waka is our go-to place when we need a fix. The sushi is great and they do a range of dishes which can cater for all tastes – even those who aren’t into raw fish. I particularly like that it’s relaxed and informal – and if you listen really closely you might hear people giving the karaoke a go upstairs.

Hello! I’m Patsy – proud Geordie, but been living in Leeds since 2019. I can usually be found in a theatre, music venue, good restaurant or some kind of child friendly activity with my daughter. I’ve really loved the variety of things on offer since moving here, especially in the world of arts and culture, but also always being only a short journey away from an amazing view or a great outdoor walk.
