The Sound of Music is Coming to Leeds Grand Theatre in 2026

One of the world’s most beloved musicals, The Sound of Music, will fill Leeds Grand Theatre with song and joy next summer, as Opera North brings Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless tale to the city.
Running from 9 July to 1 August 2026, this brand-new staging is based on Curve Theatre’s production, directed by Nikolai Foster (Kinky Boots, My Fair Lady, A Chorus Line), and will feature the incredible Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North. The full cast will be revealed closer to the date – but with a score this iconic, the music will already be ringing in your ears.
From Do-Re-Mi to My Favourite Things, Climb Ev’ry Mountain to the soaring title song, The Sound of Music has enchanted audiences since it first premiered on Broadway in 1959. The stage success was followed by the Oscar-winning 1965 film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which became a Sunday afternoon classic for generations.
This heartwarming story follows Maria, a free-spirited novice nun sent to look after the unruly von Trapp children. Her creativity, kindness, and love of music bring joy back into their lives – and into the heart of their strict father, Captain von Trapp. But as the threat of Nazi occupation looms, the family must embark on a brave escape to freedom.
Opera North is making sure as many people as possible can enjoy this feel-good classic, with £10 tickets for under 30s and £22 Secret Seats for those happy to let the theatre choose their spot. Accessible performances will also be available, including British Sign Language interpretation, audio description with touch tours, and captioned showings.
