Live Laugh Leeds: Comedy in August 2025
Larry Budd
For those too young (under 30) or with shortish memories (over 40), allow me to remind you of the story of Shannon Matthews.
In 2008, 9-year-old Shannon disappeared from her home in Dewsbury. A month later, she was found, thankfully safe and well. She had, as it emerged, been the victim of a kidnap plot organised in part by her own mother.
I was one of the reporters on the scene when she was found. The story was grim, fascinating, terrifying, and comedic all at the same time.
“But Larry, this is a comedy article, why are you telling us about Shannon Matthews?”
Because, British humour being what it is (cos we can’t deal with emotions in a constructive way) – the story was, of course, turned into a musical. Then, Shannon Matthews The Musical was turned into Shannon Matthews The Musical The Movie, which you can watch on YouTube.
The madcap comedian behind such ventures goes by the name K*nt And The Gang, and his dark comedy songs have garnered millions of views online over more than two decades.
Now’s your chance to see KATG return to where it all began. A 25th anniversary show lands at the Brudenell Social Club on the 31st of August. As you would expect, the show is NOT for the easily offended.
August is traditionally quiet because all-and-sundry are at the Edinburgh Fringe, but there are still plenty of Leeds shows to enjoy.
The Hi-Fi Club’s comedy night is regular as clockwork, with highlights including Scott Bennett, and Bradford-born Leeds-based up-and-coming rising-star Seeta Wrightson. Sorry for all the hyphens.
The Glee Club continues to settle in nicely to Leeds’ comedy scene. This month, one of the top shows includes Tom Wrigglesworth, Andrew Bird, Dave Longley, and Rachel Fairburn all on one bill! (22nd/23rd)
Australian social media star Troy Kinne plays The Wardrobe on the 13th, while Dan Nightingale (pictured) brings his friends along on the 29th, in a lineup which includes Eshaan Akbar, Connor Burns, and a mystery special guest. As ever, look out for regular comedy nights at Revolución de Cuba, Verve, Headrow House, The Original Oak, The Hi-Fi Club, The Old Woollen, and the Parkside Tavern.
