How the Leeds Digital Charity Ball Is Tackling Digital Exclusion in Our City

Chapter 81

Each year, the Leeds Digital Ball brings together the city’s digital and tech communities for a night of glamour and generosity – but beyond the sparkling dresses and buzzing dancefloor, there’s a deeper mission: tackling digital exclusion across Leeds.

Founded by Sandra Patel, the Ball is held at the Royal Armouries and raises money for the Inclusion Fund, an initiative that helps individuals and communities gain access to the digital world.

“Digital exclusion isn’t just about not having a device, it’s about the barriers that prevent people from fully participating in today’s society,” Sandra explains. “The Inclusion Fund helps break down those barriers.”

One organisation that’s felt the impact is Women’s Health Matters, a Leeds-based charity that supports women from marginalised backgrounds. Through funding from the Inclusion Fund, they’ve been able to deliver digital skills sessions, provide internet access, and support women in navigating vital services online.

We spoke with Aneira Thomas from Women’s Health Matters:

“The funding from the Digital Ball has made a real difference to the women we support – it’s more than just teaching digital skills, it’s about giving them confidence, independence and a voice.”

As the digital world advances, events like the Leeds Digital Charity Ball serve as a potent reminder that inclusion must be at the heart of progress.
