🎥 How Costumes Bring Characters to Life on Stage

Chapter 81

We headed behind the scenes to gain a glimpse into the world of costume design at Leeds Playhouse.

We spent the afternoon with Head of Costume Victoria Marzetti, Head Cutter and Workroom Manager Julie Ashworth, Costume Assistant Abbie Slack and Costume Making Trainee – Regional Theatre Technical Apprenticeship funded by The Mackintosh Foundation Josh Cartmell to delve a little deeper into the costumes designed by Set and Costume Designer Colin Richmond.

Watch the interview with Victoria below as she discusses how they keep costumes clean, breaking down costumes and so much more…

As we were filming, we had photographer Tom Martin to capture some details of the costumes. Did you know it took 5 months from start to finish to make the costumes?

Another stat we love is adding up all the hours to get ready for one show – 5 hours of maintenance, cleaning and mending; 4 hours of re-setting up the dressers on the show; 3 hours of styling the wigs – every day! That’s 720 minutes, 432000 seconds all to get that costume ready and prepped ahead of the beginners call.
