Compass Festival is back with playful pop-up interactive art – 2022
Coming around every two years, Compass Festival brings playful pop-up interactive art installations into the everyday public places of the city centre.
Back in its regular November slot (after being staged throughout 2021 due to COVID restrictions), this year there’s five very different projects to discover – to be found in the historic Kirkgate market, the bustling St John’s Centre and your nearest Morrisons’ supermarket aisle.
It invites you to share your best piece of advice, take a journey on an afro futurist spaceship, delve into a surreal soundscape in a familiar place, eat your way through Caribbean ancestry and help answer the question: ‘What are the flavours of Leeds?’.
A festival very much made with and for the people of Leeds – this year its rooted in bringing communities back together, fostering conversation, collaboration, and communal activities.
Compass Festival hits the city from Friday 18th – Sunday 27th November 2022.
Here’s exactly what you can encounter:
Hungry Ghosts by Amy Lawrence
Playing tribute to Black Caribbean matriarchs, Grandmothers and ancestors, this series of cooking events and a free ‘vending machine’ explore the impact of food, family and how the practice of cooking is linked to identity.
Leeds Sauce by Popeye Collective
A chance to get hands-on helping create the first ‘Leeds Sauce’ with the pop-up processing plant and become part of the conversation around what makes Leeds ‘Leeds’.
Wondermart by Silvia Mercuriali
Embark on an audio adventure which turns four Leeds’ Morrisons supermarkets into intimate playgrounds. An opportunity to explore the aisles, hold items up to your ears, draw in the condensation on the freezer doors and reassess an environment we take for granted.
Citizens Advise by Empathy Museum
Give and take advice with fellow Loiners on an assortment of topics – be it DIY, love, grief or even poaching an egg. Stop off at this cosy space in St John’s Centre to take a break from shopping, get warm with tea and cake, and soak up niche knowledge, with a rolling programme of Chief Advisors tackling topics of the day.
Satellite by various
Discover lived Black experience by visiting this festival-made space which documents and celebrates Black culture and identity, as well as archiving the lost Black spaces in urban centres like Leeds. The pop-up venue, shaped like a Black woman’s head with spirals of black hair tumbling from its roof, plays host to intimate workshops and events which touch upon past, present and future Black image and community.
