Comedy in Leeds : April 2023
Larry Budd
There’s a big name in Leeds to start the month, and it’s a homecoming for Nick Mohammed – the multi-award nominated star of Ted Lasso. His alter-ego, Mr Swallow, arrives at City Varieties on the 5th. Probably on roller skates.
A strong recommendation from us: One of the nicest men on the comedy circuit, Phil Ellis (Radio 4’s Phil Ellis is Trying) brings his show ‘Hedgehog’ to the Hyde Park Book Club on the 6th of April. The Edinburgh-award winning stand-up brings off-beat observational material and physical comedy to the stage.
The Hi-Fi Club hosts a night of anti-cancel-culture comedy on the 7th April. Comedian and author Andrew Doyle (GB News, Titania McGrath, ‘The New Puritans’) heads a bill for Comedy Unleashed, which describes itself as the home of “Free-Thinking Comedy”.
It’s a busy month for the Hi-Fi Club, with appearances from Alun Cochrane, Pete Otway, and Yorkshire favourite Scott Bennett.
Fresh from a Netflix special, as well as appearances on David Letterman, The Moth Club, and every panel show ever, Phil Wang’s show ‘Wang In There, Baby!’ is at the City Varieties on the 20th of April. He’ll be swiftly followed by one-liner legend Tim Vine on the 26th and 27th, before Rosie Holt brings her extraordinarily successful brand of satire to the stage on the 30th.
Comedy behemoth Micky Flanagan is back in Leeds for two sell-out shows at the First Direct Arena. Expect lots of people who are “Out Out” – and bad versions of the Lambeth Walk all around the Arena Quarter.
And if it’s the smaller shows you’re after, look out for shows at The Fenton, Headrow House, The Original Oak, The Parkside Tavern, and Seven Arts
