Art and post-punk: Leeds Fest Day 2
Chapter 81
Saturday best: Leeds Fest Day 2
Day two, and Bramham Park knows exactly what it is.
The afternoon belonged to the tents. Florence Road were our surprise package of the weekend, a four-piece from County Wicklow playing coming-of-age anthems in The Ballroom to a room that appeared to decide, somewhere around the third song, that it had always been a fan. Geese rocked The Gallery previously, all elastic riffs and a band that commits considerably harder than a five o’clock slot asks them to.
One sour note. The Warehouse was closed at around five, with the festival app telling people to move away from the stage. Locky and Alisha both lost their sets, and both said afterwards they were gutted. No fuller explanation had come from the festival by the time we left.
Then Charli XCX on The Grid, which was less a set than a piece of art. Stark, deliberate, closer to an installation than a festival headline, and the sort of thing people will still be arguing about on the coach home. Fontaines D.C. closed the same stage running slightly late and took the opposite route, straight at it, no ceremony required, and Bramham Park went up accordingly.
Between the two of them, you had the whole festival in one evening. One built a world and stood inside it, the other just kicked the doors in. The crowd took both.
One more to go.
