A Pop of Pride: Whatshisname brings his Balloon Dogs to Victoria Leeds

We caught up with contemporary artist Whatshisname in the gallery as he launches his new Pride activation in the heart of the city.

Two of Leeds’ most colourful characters are having a big summer. Leeds Pride turns 20, Victoria Leeds turns 10, and to mark both, the city centre has become an open-air gallery for one of the most talked-about names in contemporary art.

Running throughout July, Two Milestones, One Pop of Pride brings a vibrant, playful public art experience to Victoria Leeds — curated by Castle Fine Art in the Victoria Quarter and featuring a collection of artworks and oversized sculptures by internationally acclaimed artist Whatshisname.

Behind that deliberately ironic moniker is Sebastian Burdon, who has spent more than 15 years making his mark on the contemporary art world through sculpture, prints and large-scale public art. His work blends humour, pop culture and social commentary — pieces designed to intrigue, surprise and start a conversation.

The centrepiece of the activation is two of his iconic POPek Balloon Dog sculptures, positioned at key spots for visitors to enjoy all month. One sits on the central mosaic in the Victoria Quarter; the other stands outside John Lewis in Victoria Gate. Together they turn a stroll through the city into a moment of colour, curiosity and celebration.

We sat down with the artist in the gallery to talk about the work, the meaning behind the moniker, and what it means to bring a splash of Pride to Leeds this summer. Watch the full interview above.
