Chapter 81

A new chapter is coming to one of Leeds’ most fondly remembered pub sites, as The Smithfield gets ready to open on North Street this April. Taking over the former home of The Reliance, the new venue is looking to honour the legacy of a much-loved Leeds stalwart while bringing fresh energy to the space with a casual, produce-led dining offer. The Smithfield is a collaboration between Crooked Brewing and chef James Donovan, with a focus on seasonal ingredients, relaxed dining and creating a place that feels rooted in the local community.

In our video interview, Steve Dawson, co-founder of The Smithfield and Crooked Brewing, talks about his admiration for The Reliance and why the team felt such a responsibility to do the site justice. We also hear from chef and co-founder James Donovan, who shares more about the food philosophy behind the opening, with simple, thoughtful plates designed to let quality ingredients shine. Together, they explain what it means to be opening in Leeds and why they hope The Smithfield will become a welcoming new neighbourhood favourite on North Street. With much-loved spots like The Brunswick and Wen’s already on the street, newbies Pole Pole and The Swine are expected to do something new (after their move to Headingley), the area is shaping up to offer one of the most distinctive food and drink scenes in the city once again.
