🎶 Live at Leeds, an unforgettable inner city celebration of music

In our vibrant city of Leeds, 2023 witnessed a remarkable convergence of music and magic, creating yet another unforgettable inner city soiree that will be long etched in our memories. “Live at Leeds in the City” made a triumphant return and this year it delivered an experience that exceeded all expectations. This annual extravaganza had firmly established itself as one of the most anticipated events on the city’s cultural calendar, and the 2023 edition elevated the experience to unprecedented heights.
Live at Leeds transformed the heart of Leeds into a mesmerising world of sound, artistry, and euphoria. With a lineup that spanned genres, generations, and utilising the whole of the West Yorkshire city’s geography, the festival delivered a kaleidoscope of musical diversity that left no stone unturned in its quest to captivate everyone in attendance.
Before we attended this weekend’s festival, we picked out five key acts from the most beloved venues in the city. Those included Shaene, who recently released their new album of emo-infused cuts, performing at the historic Brudenell in what was their debut at the venue. Other picks included the ever present Porij who always deliver the goods when returning to Leeds. After seeing them only last year, it was fitting that I watched them delve into their archives for further renditions of their electronic face-melters.

Our path then took us back to our favourite Call Lane dwelling, Oporto, exploring the highs, the hidden gems, and an array of unforgettable, synth-heavy disco takes from Home Counties that made my “Live at Leeds in the City” experience an event that every music lover should experience. Their ever growing hit ‘Bethnal Green’ was a highlight full of catchy hooks and as we wait for the latest full length to drop, this is one edit that is leaving us wanting to hear more.
Over at Leeds Stylus, a venue that has personally dropped off my radar over the past few years, played home to Cassia, who are an ever present with the Future Sound brand. Classically falling under the alternative indie moniker the trio curated a solid performance offering us a plethora of old and new hits with their latest single ‘Find My Way Around’ providing delight to the packed house.

One of the main headliners for this year’s show were Wunderhorse, who have been building their fan base even before their debut album Club in 2022 which was named one of the best albums of the year. The four piece is fronted by James Slater and echoed elements of Kurt Cobain and Thom Yorke with the crowd’s joyous single along providing a cherry on the cake.
Live at Leeds in the City 2023 goes from strength to strength each year and was a day and night that offered us unforgettable moments that resonated with the diverse attendees. It was a celebration that left a lasting impression on the city and its residents, making it a must-attend event for any music and art lover looking for alternative venues to attend and fresh artists to add to their ever growing playlists – here’s looking ahead to 2024 already.
