Theatres of dreams: August’s best acts to catch
Stan Graham
Once we get past the summer solstice on 22nd June the nights begin to get darker. In most places this is a gradual process but in the country known as Theatreland it happens all at once. The term ‘dark’, for the non-luvvies reading this, means that auditoria are closed, and so August is their version of our December. The good thing is that our December is their June as, what with pantos and Christmas shows, the lights never go out. So, what do we have left, well, the few productions which are playing are certainly worth a look.
The sole offering from Leeds Playhouse is the musical, In Dreams, based on the songs of Roy Orbison. It opened on 3rd July and so I have had the pleasure of seeing and reviewing it. I would highly recommend the show, but you had better be quick though as it ends on 5th August. For details and bookings head HERE
The Grand Theatre bookends the month with the smash hit Six, which is about the wives of Henry VIII running from 1st August until 6th August and, again you need to keep your head and execute your ticket transaction promptly as it is almost sold out already. The bookshelf is balanced by the 70th Anniversary Tour of The Mousetrap, Agatha Christie’s thriller which holds the World Record for the longest run of any play in history. It is only on at the Grand for a week, from 29th August until 2nd September. Don’t hold me to that though, as Mrs Christie was quoted as saying that she only gave the play fourteen months on its opening. I hope I am right though, because if it runs at the Grand for 70 years I will need to live to be 143 to preview the next production! For details of the shows at the Grand Theatre visit their website.
Will the last person out of the theatre please switch off the lights?
