Chapter 81

If you’re looking for a unique, interactive way to while away a few hours in Leeds city centre, MathsCity might just be the perfect place for you. Located in the heart of Trinity Leeds shopping centre, this haven for curious minds of all ages opened in October 2021, and aims to inspire everyone through the power of mathematics.

MathsCity is the brainchild of MathsWorldUK, a charity dedicated to bringing maths to a wider audience and using it to drive positive impact through enjoyment and play. It’s all about laying the foundations for the cultural and economic benefits that can come as a result of a good relationship with mathematics – encouraging more people to build skills in this area and tackling a wealth of unsolved problems, from climate change to societal inequalities and beyond.

Local partners including LeedsBID, Trinity Leeds and the University of Leeds have come on board to support the new MathsCity centre, which has its sights set on establishing an open, inclusive space to discover more about all things mathematical. Founded on the belief that maths plays, and will continue to play a vital role in the development of the human race, MathsCity encourages visitors to explore more than 30 interactive exhibits, puzzles and installations designed to educate, excite and spark brand new conversations.

The Leeds centre is continually developing new activities and displays to keep the whole family entertained. During the Christmas period, workshops covered everything from games to crafts – and new interactive opportunities are in the pipeline soon.

Check out the MathsCity website to find out more about the centre and book your visit. Tickets are £6.50 for adults, £4.50 for children and free for under threes.
