The Best Wine Bars In Leeds

If you’re after a nice glass of wine in Leeds city centre, look no further than these excellent wine bars for a great evening out.

Some nights, you want nothing more than a nice glass or bottle (or more) of good wine. While you can find this in most pubs, it’s not the same as going to a proper wine bar and being served a great vintage by people who know their vino.

In Leeds, there are so many different options it’s hard to count. However, we can run through some of the best wine bars for your next evening out, so you can find a great spot for your next glass of Chablis or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

You’ve probably seen this wine bar the most often, as it’s situated just on Park Row, but you might not have experienced it yet. If so, then you must; the stylish environment contains an excellent selection of wines, along with a great charcuterie and cheese menu and special offers for after-work drinks.

One of the specialties of the Decanter is its selection of more unusual wines, which you are encouraged to try by the menu. In addition to sections of wines “for the adventurous”, the menu recommends more unique wines based on the kind of thing you usually drink. Instead of Chardonnay, for example, you’re encouraged to try the 2013 Castillo Clavijo Rioja Barrel Fermented Viura.

Tucked away just off Water Lane, the Foundry is a fantastic wine bar in an area full of pubs. If you’re down behind the train station, it’s worth stepping in here for a glass. It also offers a full menu if you’re hungry, with classic dishes like pork fillet with black pudding, or wild mushroom ravioli.

The wine list is enormous, but the bar makes it easy to choose by featuring certain wines it wants to highlight. For example, the current featured red wine is an oak-aged 2016 Veneto Rosso, which boasts a “rich luscious nose full of sweet, ripe dark cherry and plum”.

Located on St Paul’s Street, in the heart of the financial district, Wino is a great place to spend an evening. It’s based on a relaxed, European style of bar, with good music, informed service and tasty bar food to go along with your wine.

Wino’s drinks menu offers wines you might not have tried before, as the bar aims to offer you something different from the usual fare you’d find in pubs. Try a glass of the Picpoul de Pinet Domaine de la Serre, or if you’d prefer red, the Vina Mariposa Tinto Galicia.

Ham and Friends Photo Credit: @hamwines

While Friends of Ham has become well-known in Leeds for its food and beer offerings – although it has got an impressive wine selection of its own – its sister restaurant is a great place to go for a bottle of vino. Ham and Friends is a natural wine bar, meaning its menu is based around biodynamic and organic winemaking processes.

Their wine menu is ever-changing, but offers a lot of variety. In addition to whites and reds, you can try sweet dessert wines and even orange wines, like the Baglio Bianco, which are made from white wine grapes without removing the skins.
